Laser Resurfacing
A Younger Looking You: Laser Resurfacing in Scottsdale With Dr. Pamela Henderson
As we age, our skin goes through natural changes. Skin loses its natural elasticity as collagen production decreases, making wrinkles and sagging skin far more prominent. This effect makes men and women appear much older, creating a less than desirable appearance. Rather than undergoing invasive plastic surgery procedures, many patients are opting for laser resurfacing in Scottsdale.
What is laser resurfacing?
Laser resurfacing is a procedure that uses various lasers to remove layers of skin, revealing new, fresh skin from below the surface. Laser resurfacing is often used to treat the effects of aging, including wrinkled or sagging skin. It can also be utilized to reduce the appearance of sun damage or scarring, often caused by acne.
Am I a good candidate for laser resurfacing?
Men and women both undergo laser resurfacing procedures. If you are experiencing loose or saggy skin you may be an ideal candidate for laser resurfacing. Patients with sun-damaged skin may also utilize laser resurfacing to reduce the appearance of freckles and sunspots that develop on their face. Generally, individuals with light complexions are ideal candidates because the procedure can cause discoloration in olive and dark complected individuals.
If you have a darker complexion or are still experiencing active acne lesions, laser resurfacing may not be the best procedure for your skin. You can schedule a consultation with Dr. Henderson to see if laser resurfacing would work for you.
How is the procedure performed?
Dr. Henderson may recommend a pre-surgery treatment of a Retin-A® and a bleaching cream like Hydroquinone to reduce the risk of skin discoloration. In most cases, the procedure is outpatient and can be completed under local or topical anesthetic but IV sedation is available if desired. Dr. Henderson will determine which type of laser and technique is best for your skin condition to ensure you receive the optimal results.
The CO2 laser is available in both the fully ablative and the fractional forms and which laser is chosen is based on the degree of wrinkling and patient expectations. The more aggressive the treatment the more skin tightening benefits will be achieved. The erbium laser has a faster recovery time and can be used to treat mild wrinkling as well as other superficial conditions.
What is the recovery process like?
Recovery varies greatly based on your individual procedure. Some patients may only experience mild exfoliation that lasts a few days, while others may endure a raw feeling to the skin that lasts a couple of weeks. The specialists at New Image Plastic Surgery will provide instructions to treat any weeping that may occur, as well as skin treatment. Ointment will be administered to aid the healing process. Itching and a pink tone are common and may last a few weeks to months as the skin heals.
Your skin will be highly sensitive after the procedure and should be protected with sunscreen at all times. Take care to not use products that may irritate the skin or prolong the healing process.
