A chemical peel causes the outer layer of the skin to slough off

A chemical peel uses an acidic solution. This is applied to the surface of the skin, which temporarily makes it more acidic. The solution is left on the skin for a certain period of time and is then removed.

The outer layer of skin is normally made up of a layer of dead skin cells. The acid in the peel solution dissolves the connections between these dead skin cells and the living ones below. Once it’s no longer connected, this layer will naturally slough off. This may occur all at once in an obvious sheet, or slowly over time so that you don’t even notice each tiny bit flaking off.

Once the dead skin cells are removed, the living skin beneath will be visible. It generally looks brighter and smoother than the dead skin layer. In addition, the removal of the outer layer stimulates the body’s natural healing response. The skin responds by producing proteins like collagen, which lead to skin tightening.

In addition, removing the dead skin cells can unclog the pores. Clogged pores can trap bacteria and lead to infections, which show up as acne. People with acne may find that a chemical peel helps to clear up their skin by removing clogs in the pores.
