Agnes RF vs Scarlet RF: What are the differences?

RF Microneedling Scottsdale

Microneedling can offer powerful results for a variety of common skin concerns, from acne scars to aging. Adding radiofrequency energy to this procedure enhances the outcomes. The tiny needles can be used to transmit radiofrequency (RF) energy into the tissues of the face. This creates localized tissue heating, which then activates the body’s healing response and results in increased production of collagen and elastin.

The field of cosmetic medicine is constantly advancing. Dr. Henderson always keeps a close eye on the latest research, so she can offer the most effective treatments to her patients. Currently, we’re offering two different RF microneedling procedures – Scarlet RF and Agnes RF. Both of these can deliver powerful results.

What are the differences between these two RF microneedling procedures? How can you know which one is right for you?

Scarlet RF uses multiple very tiny needles

The Scarlet RF system uses multiple needles at once. The needles are extremely tiny, and don’t penetrate very deeply into the skin. These needles also aren’t insulated, meaning that they deliver RF energy all along their length.

Because it uses multiple needles, Scarlet RF tends to be used over larger areas. For example, Scarlet RF works very well for skin texture issues, or for addressing the visible signs of aging (fine lines and wrinkles). It’s excellent at creating an overall tightening and lifting effect, by stimulating collagen production.

Because the needles of the Scarlet RF system don’t penetrate as deeply, this system can also be used in areas where the skin is more delicate, such as around the eye. Scarlet RF can create a tightening and lifting effect in this area. This can be an alternative to blepharoplasty (a surgical eye lift) for some people.

Agnes RF uses a few insulated needles

With Agnes RF, only one to three needles at a time are inserted. The needles are still very small, and they come in multiple different lengths, allowing the practitioner to choose the depth of penetration. Agnes RF needles can penetrate somewhat more deeply than Scarlet RF needles, allowing them to enter into the fat tissue beneath the skin. These needles are also insulated along most of their length, so they deliver RF energy just at the tip of the needle, rather than all along the length. This allows targeting of specific tissues, without causing any damage to other tissues along the way.

The deeper penetration of the needle can allow Agnes RF to be used to target fat tissue. When fat tissue is heated with RF energy, this causes coagulation, which destroys fat cells. These are then naturally removed by the body. This means that Agnes RF can be an effective way to target issues like eye bags, jowls, and fat under the jaw (submental fat or a “double chin”), which are common areas of concern for many people.

Because Agnes RF uses just one to three needles at a time, the system is a little more targeted, and is better for treating specific localized concerns. It can be used for acne scars, and can even be useful for those experiencing chronic acne, by targeting the sebaceous glands that produce oil. Agnes RF can also be used for skin tightening and lifting.
