Fillers vs botox: which one is right for you?

Many people are looking for a way to turn back the clock on facial aging. A surgical facelift offers the most dramatic results, and is still a popular option – facelift has been among the 5 most common cosmetic surgical procedures for many years. At the same time, there are many people who don’t want to commit to having surgery and would prefer a nonsurgical method of reversing aging.

Botox and dermal fillers are extremely popular nonsurgical antiaging options. These are both injectable treatments, but they’re very different from each other. If you’re considering having one of these, how can you choose? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each one?

Botox is used to prevent wrinkles

Botulinum toxin, or botox, acts to interrupt communication between nerves and muscles. This causes the muscles to remain in a relaxed state. When it’s used for cosmetic purposes, Botox is injected into particular facial muscles and causes them to stay relaxed. When they’re active, these muscles cause folds in the skin of the face. Over time, these folds become more permanent, turning into wrinkles and grooves. By keeping the muscles relaxed, botox interrupts this process.

Botox prevents new wrinkles from forming. It doesn’t directly remove the ones that are already there. However, by relaxing the muscles that caused those grooves to form in the first place, botox will keep them from getting worse. Over time, the skin will naturally smooth out and the wrinkles will become less and less apparent. This effect is gradual; wrinkles will not disappear immediately but will fade slowly over time.

In general, botox will only be effective for wrinkles that are caused by facial expressions. Wrinkles caused by gravity, sleeping position, or other factors will not be effectively treated by botox. Botox is FDA-approved for treating glabellar lines (the vertical grooves which form between the eyebrows), and can also be used in other areas, including for crow’s feet, on the sides of the nose, and on the forehead.

Dermal fillers are used to fill in wrinkles

By contrast, dermal fillers are used to add volume. There are a variety of different fillers, but the most popular is made up of hyaluronic acid. This is a natural substance that’s made by the body, and it acts like a gel to hold water in tissues.

Dermal fillers can be injected under a deep wrinkle or groove, to fill it in. This is a way to get rid of wrinkles that are not caused by facial expressions, so botox would not be able to address them. For example, those who sleep on their sides may get vertical wrinkles on the sides of the face from the pressure of the pillow.

Fillers can also be used to add back volume to areas of the face that tend to lose it as part of the aging process. For example, aging tends to result in loss of volume in the area around the cheeks, which can cause the face to look “hollow” and aged. Fillers can help to add back this lost volume and rejuvenate the overall facial appearance.

It’s certainly possible to combine treatments with botox and fillers into a single session. Botox can be used to address the lines of expression, while fillers can be used on the wrinkles and grooves that are caused by gravity, sleep position, or other factors, and to fill in areas of lost volume. For deeper wrinkles that have been caused by facial muscle movements over time, fillers and botox can be combined. A filler can be used to get rid of the wrinkle, while botox can be used to prevent it from coming back.
