How is a medical-grade facial different from a spa facial?
Medical-grade facial Scottsdale
Going to the spa for a facial can be a wonderful experience. The environment is usually beautiful and relaxing, and you’ll leave with cleansed skin.
We also offer facials here in the office. However, these aren’t your usual spa facials. Instead, what we offer are medical-grade facials. How does a medical-grade facial differ from a facial you can get at the spa? What types of skin issues might be addressed by a medical-grade facial?
Medical-grade facials
A medical-grade facial can address particular skin concerns. We use the AquaFirme XS system. This involves applying serums to the skin, which have been shown in research to have certain effects. During the facial, specific technology is then used to help the serum penetrate more deeply into the skin. Issues that can be addressed during an AquaFirme treatment include:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sun damage
- Pigmentation changes
- Uneven skin texture
- Acne
- Oily skin
- Dry skin
In addition, a medical-grade facial is designed for deep cleansing and exfoliation. This can help to rejuvenate the appearance and aid with many different skin issues.
Because the treatment is able to penetrate more deeply into the skin, a medical-grade facial can provide longer-lasting results than a spa facial. A medical-grade facial needs to be performed by a licensed medical aesthetician, because it involves more extensive treatment than a spa facial. It can be used as a stand-alone treatment, or it can be combined with other aesthetic treatments (such as microneedling, laser skin resurfacing, or a chemical peel) for enhanced results.
Spa facials
By contrast, a spa facial is primarily intended for relaxing and being pampered. It will cleanse the skin and remove impurities, and may help with some skin concerns. However, a spa facial is not generally intended as a treatment for skin issues.
Spa facials generally target only the surface layer of the skin. There’s no technology involved to help the treatment penetrate more deeply. This means that the results of a spa facial don’t tend to last as long, since only the surface layer of the skin is involved.

If what you’re looking for is primarily relaxation and being pampered, a spa facial is a great choice. A medical-grade facial is also generally a relaxing experience, but it’s not specifically designed for this as spa facials are. However, if you’re looking to improve your skin or address skin issues, then a medical-grade facial is definitely a better choice.
