Enhance Volume, Improve Scars, and Eliminate Wrinkles
Enhancing skin volume with injectable treatments minimizes the appearance of soft tissue loss, softens facial wrinkles and folds, improves depressed scars, and augments lips. Augmentation materials are roughly divided into two categories: fillers and collagen stimulants (but some degree of overlap can be seen). The choice of which to use depends on a variety of factors including cost, longevity, and risks. Generally, initial satisfaction is dependent upon using adequate volume to achieve full correction. Arranging an appointment to discuss injectable treatments with Dr. Pamela Henderson at her Scottsdale,Arizona office is the best way to receive an estimate of the volume that will be required. Hyaluronic Acids: Restylane® and JUVÉDERM®, JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance which helps create the youthful suppleness in the skin. With age, the production of hyaluronic acid decreases, contributing to the deepening of facial wrinkles and folds. Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® are injectable treatments that improve moderate to deep facial wrinkles and folds as well as fill depressed scars. Both can also be used for lip enhancement and are appropriate options for improving minor contour deformities of the nose. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC is the only FDA approved injectable filler designed to instantly recontour the face and restore facial volume to the cheeks to give a more lifted and youthful appearance.
For hollowing below the eyes, Dr. Henderson prefers Restylane®, which she has found to have a lower risk of creating prolonged undesirable swelling. Results generally last an average of six to 12 months but more recent studies have shown that results can last up to 18 months if the patient returns for a follow-up treatment within the first nine months. Generally, during this follow-up treatment, only half the original volume is required to achieve full correction.
Radiesse®
Radiesse® is composed of microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite, a substance naturally found in teeth and bone, suspended in a polysaccharide carrier. Due to its unique characteristics, when injected into soft tissue, collagenesis (new collagen formation) is stimulated as the product is resorbed. Because Radiesse® is able to produce both immediate results as well as sustain longer lasting results from collagen formation, these injectable treatments are considered both fillers and stimulants. It is appropriate for filling folds around the mouth, enhancing the volume of the mid-face and along the jaw line, filling contour irregularities in the nose and hollowing below the eyes. It is not appropriate for treatment of superficial wrinkles or for lip augmentation. Many patients receiving Radiesse® injectable treatments at Dr. Henderson’s Scottsdale, Arizona practice have experienced results lasting a year or more.
Sculptra® Aesthetic
Sculptra® Aesthetic is an injectable treatment composed of biocompatible poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic material which stimulates collagen formation as it is absorbed. This material is found in commonly used absorbable suture material. Once hydrated, a suspension is created which is injected in deeper facial folds and diffusely in areas of volume loss such as the mid-face and temples. It is not appropriate for use more superficially to improve fine lines nor is it used for lip enhancement or for the hollowing of the lower lids. Although there may be some initial swelling due to the injection of the saline in which the particles are suspended, giving the illusion of filling, these effects are short-term. Results occur gradually, starting at about six weeks and continuing over several months. Repeat treatments are not uncommon to achieve the final desired result. Because the ability to stimulate skin is not entirely predictable, results are individual and cannot be guaranteed.
