The recovery from a rhinoplasty varies greatly depending on the type of procedure and the unique characteristics of each patient’s anatomy. Some procedures involve only the exterior portions of the nose, while others require significant involvement of the internal structures, which may contribute to a longer recovery period.
In any case, your consultation with Dr. Henderson will give you an excellent idea of your expected recovery period, as she will be able to provide you with a timeline and advice based on your specific procedure. This information will be provided to you again following your procedure, and at subsequent follow-up visits.
The Recovery Period Immediately After Your Rhinoplasty in Scottsdale/Phoenix
In most cases, your nose will require an external splint and an internal splint following the procedure. These splints will protect your nose and allow it to grow into its new shape using the body’s natural healing processes. They will also protect your nose from accidental impacts incurred during the day and during your sleep. In addition to this splinting, some patients may require internal nasal packing or external bandages to help with bleeding and keep your nose in place. These measures are temporary, and Dr. Henderson will work with you to make sure that they can be removed as soon as possible.
The removal of these bandages is an exciting event for most rhinoplasty patients. However, when these dressings are removed, there is generally still some normal swelling remaining. For this reason, your true appearance may not be appreciated for several weeks or months. Dr. Henderson will be able to address any persistant swelling, bruising or bleeding concerns during your follow-up visits.

Some patients report intermittent swelling of their nose during this healing process, which may be especially noticeable in the morning.
As with any facial surgery, it is absolutely essential that the nose be protected from accidental injury. Very active sports and other potential causes of facial impact should be avoided for whatever period of time Dr. Henderson feels will give you the best outcome. In your follow-up visits, Dr. Henderson will give you a complete explanation of the best way to care for your face as it heals. She will also be happy to answer any questions you might have about healing and the recovery process.
