The recovery period following a fractional laser treatment depends heavily on the scope of the procedure performed. More intense treatments will have longer and more significant recovery periods, while isolated spot treatments may have faster periods of healing. Though these variables may change, generally the healing process will proceed through the same stages, regardless of how much of your face is being treated.
During your consultation with Dr. Henderson, you will be able to ask any questions you might have about the recovery period, and will be able to schedule your timeline to make sure that your treatments have healed in time for important events such as celebrations or vacations. Though each person’s skin response may vary, Dr. Henderson should be able to give you a good estimate of how your skin type will respond to therapy, allowing you to predict some of the details of your recovery.
The Recovery Period Immediately After Your Fractional Laser Treatment in Scottsdale/Phoenix
Most patients who have fractional laser treatment experience what feels like a mild sunburn. There is typically some swelling and redness in the treatment area, which is only temporary. In some cases, patients report itching or a stinging sensation after the procedure.
More intense treatments may result in a similar but more severe response, as if the patient has had a more severe sunburn. Skin may appear raw and blistered, and may form a crust. These crusts should not be removed, or there is a potential for scarring. This is not necessarily a negative response, but rather the body’s natural healing mechanisms responding to a more intense treatment.
Long-Term Scottsdale/Phoenix Fractional Laser Treatment Recovery
In general, about five days to one week after you receive your fractional laser treatment in Scottsdale/Phoenix, your skin should begin to dry out and peel, similar to a sunburn. At this point, your new skin will grow in pinker than your previous skin, but should lighten over the next few months. In some cases, it may continue to heal and lighten for up to a year. Generally, this redness persists longer in patients with blond or red hair.
During your recovery period, it is absolutely crucial that you take proper care of your healing skin. Daily application of moisturizing lotion should be applied as recommended by Dr. Henderson. Special lotions may be helpful for this process. Sunscreen formulated specially for healing skin is absolutely essential, as your new skin must be protected from sun damage, which can have a devastating effect on your results. This sunscreen must be applied every day, even if you will only be receiving normal sun exposure. In addition, you may be directed to clean your treated skin several times daily using a solution that is recommended by Dr. Henderson. Other protective skin treatments may also be recommended.
