Restore Skin’s Volume with Collagen Injections
Radiesse® Scottsdale, Arizona
Collagen is responsible for the volume and elasticity found in young, healthy skin. Over time, due to gaining and environmental factors, skin’s natural collagen dissipates, leading to the development of wrinkles and folds. Now, injectable treatments such as Radiesse® exist to replace collagen, restoring skin’s youthful appearance. To learn more about Radiesse®, contact Dr. Pamela Henderson at her practice in Scottsdale, Arizona.
What Is Radiesse® Made From?
Radiesse® is composed of microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite, which is naturally found in teeth and bone, suspended in a biocompatible polysaccharide carrier.
How Is the Procedure Performed?
Radiesse® injections are performed as a minor, non-surgical procedure in Dr. Henderson’s office examination room. Depending on the injection site, topical anesthetics, nerve blocks, or ice packs can be used to reduce discomfort. Radiesse® is now FDA-approved to be mixed with lidocaine prior to injection to enhance patient comfort. The procedure can take 10 to 30 minutes depending on the areas involved.
What Areas Can Be Treated with Radiesse®?
Radiesse® treats moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, pre-jowl depressions, mid-face volume loss, and contour irregularities of the nose by providing instant fill while stimulating collagen production.
How Long Does It Last?
Although results vary by individual, the effects of Radiesse® typically last a year or longer.
What Are the Risks?
Although uncommon, risks associated with the use of Radiesse® are generally mild to moderate and may include bruising, swelling, bumps, redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, itching, discoloration and infection. Extremely rare cases of skin loss due to vascular occlusion have been reported. To decrease risk of bruising, discontinuing substances that can prolong bleeding such as aspirin products and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, aspirin, etc.) may be desirable.
Is a Skin Test Required?
No, because its components are naturally found in the bone and teeth, Radiesse® is not recognized as foreign and, therefore, there is almost no risk of rejection or allergic reactions.
Are There Any Contraindications?
Injections should not be performed in areas of acute infection or inflammation. Radiesse® is not for people with severe allergies or with hypersensitivity to any of the components. The safety of Radiesse® use during pregnancy, or while breast-feeding, has not been established. Additional contraindications may exist and are discussed with Dr. Henderson during the consultation.
Is There Anything I Should or Shouldn’t Do after Treatment?
After receiving Radiesse® injections, the use of an ice pack may be used to reduce bruising and swelling. Strenuous activities should be avoided for 24 hours. Excessive exposure to sun and heat should also be avoided for a minimum of 24 hours. If lumpiness is noted as the swelling resolves, gentle massage may be recommended.
